Loft Boarding Over Insulation in Walsall

If your loft already has good insulation, boarding straight over it flattens it. We raise the deck instead, so the insulation keeps working.

If you've already got decent insulation in your loft — maybe from a previous top-up, or an ECO4-funded job — the last thing you want is boarding that undoes it. This service is specifically for that situation: fitting a storage floor that sits above your existing insulation rather than squashing it, so the work you or a previous owner already had done keeps paying off.

The problem with boarding straight over insulation

Standard joists are around 100mm deep. Insulation needs to be around 270mm to perform properly. If boards go flat across the joists, they compress whatever insulation is in the way down to whatever gap the joists allow — often a third of its proper thickness or less. Squashed insulation loses most of its effectiveness, so you end up with a cold band right where the boarding sits, exactly the area you probably use most.

How raising the deck fixes it

We fix a system of raised supports to your joists — sturdy legs that lift a new deck clear above the existing insulation, leaving it completely undisturbed at whatever depth it's currently at. If your current insulation depth is already close to the recommended level, this alone solves the problem. If it's thinner than ideal, we'll flag that during the survey too, since it's a natural moment to top it up before boarding goes over it.

How this relates to our other boarding services

This service assumes your insulation is already reasonably close to where it should be and focuses purely on protecting it. If you'd like insulation and boarding sorted together in one visit — useful where the insulation genuinely needs upgrading rather than just protecting — our insulated loft boarding service combines both. For the full technical detail on the raised-support system itself, see our raised loft boarding page.
