Room in Roof Insulation in Walsall

Loft rooms and dormers have their own insulation challenges — sloping ceilings, stud walls and hidden voids. We insulate them properly, so the room is comfortable in every season.

A converted loft room or a house with dormer windows is a different insulation job to a standard cold loft. Instead of one flat layer above the ceiling, you're dealing with sloping ceilings that follow the roofline, stud walls that box in awkward voids, and small triangular spaces behind knee walls that are easy to miss and even easier to insulate badly. Get it wrong and the room swings from an oven in summer to a fridge in winter — which is exactly the complaint we hear most from homeowners with a loft room that's never quite worked.

Why loft rooms are harder to insulate well

A standard loft has flat joists and a simple, well-understood insulation depth. A room in the roof has multiple insulation zones — the sloping rafters themselves, the flat ceiling above the room, the small "eaves cupboards" or voids behind knee walls, and sometimes dormer cheeks and roofs too. Missing any one of these leaves a cold spot or a hot spot that undoes the comfort of the whole room.

Insulating rafters and stud walls properly

We insulate between and, where there's room, over the rafters themselves, matched to the ventilation the roof needs to stay dry — a poorly insulated roof slope can trap moisture just as easily as a poorly insulated flat loft. Stud walls and eaves voids get insulated too, since these hidden triangular spaces are directly connected to the room and lose heat fast if left as bare cold air pockets.

Keeping the roof breathing

Getting the ventilation right at the same time as the insulation matters — insulate a sloping roof without a route for moisture to escape, and you risk damp timbers hidden behind the plasterboard where nobody sees it until it's a real problem, similar to the issues our roof ventilation team deals with elsewhere in a roof.

What we check on survey

We look at every zone of the room — rafters, knee walls, eaves voids, dormer cheeks if you have them — and identify exactly where heat is getting in or out. Grant funding can sometimes apply depending on your circumstances, which we'll check as part of the visit.

A comfortable room, whatever the season

Our own team carries out the work, protects the finished room as we go, and leaves it ready to redecorate. We carry £5m public liability insurance, and every job comes with a free survey and fixed price agreed before we start.

If your loft room or dormer bedroom is uncomfortable half the year, book a free survey and we'll show you exactly where the gaps are.
